Dialogue thread, Itki. The case of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar trying to remove the hijab of a female doctor during a public event now seems to be taking a legal turn.
Social and political activist Mohd., resident of Itki, Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. A delegation led by Murteza Alam has applied to register an FIR against the Chief Minister in this regard at Itki police station.
According to complainant Murteza Alam, during a recent government appointment letter distribution ceremony held in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar publicly interfered with the hijab of a Muslim female doctor present on the stage.
It is alleged that the Chief Minister tried to touch and remove the woman's hijab in front of the cameras and a huge crowd. The video of this incident has gone viral on social media and news channels. In the application, this act of the Chief Minister has been termed as unconstitutional and insulting and it is a violation of religious and personal freedom and has also said that Hijab is an integral part of the religious faith and privacy of Muslim women.
Touching it without consent is a violation of Article 25 (religious freedom). Such treatment of a woman's attire on a public platform is a direct attack on her modesty and bodily autonomy.
The complainant says that a Chief Minister is expected to be a protector of the Constitution, but this conduct has created a feeling of insecurity and humiliation in the society. The application states that this incident has hurt the self-esteem of not only the woman concerned, but also the entire minority community and women. Which is a threat to social harmony, Hijab is not just a garment, it is a woman's identity and respect.
Such behavior by a person sitting at the top of power is against democratic values. Legal action has been demanded to maintain justice and supremacy of the Constitution.
In the application given to the police, it has been demanded that the matter should be investigated impartially and action should be taken by registering a case under appropriate sections. Till the time of writing the news, no official response has been received from the police in this matter.
