There is an atmosphere of anger in the city after a case of brutal violence against a dog came to light in Shalimar Bazaar area under Dhurva police station area of Ranchi. In a video viral on social media, it can be clearly seen that a woman and some youth together first tie the dog with a rope and then brutally beat it to death with bricks and sticks. After the video surfaced, there is huge anger among animal lovers and social organizations.
The matter came to light through social media
In this regard, Saloni Srivastava, a resident of Chutiya Ram Mandir, Ranchi, filed an application at Dhurva police station on Tuesday demanding registration of an FIR. In the application, he told that he received this video through social media, in which the place of incident has been described as Shalimar Market. After watching the video, she was extremely hurt and considered it a serious crime and demanded action from the police. On the basis of the complaint, the police registered a case and started investigation. On the basis of video footage, Pooja Tirkey, Deepu Singh and four other people have been identified. In his application, the complainant has demanded strictest action against all the accused, so that such inhuman incident does not happen again with any voiceless animal in future.
Dissatisfaction over delay in post mortem
After the incident, the dead dog was sent for post-mortem, but it is alleged that the concerned doctor reached the spot after about three hours. It was told that despite repeated calls, the doctor kept postponing the appointment by saying “he is coming”. There was resentment among animal lovers and social workers regarding this delay. He says that quick action and sensitivity is very important in such incidents.
One accused sent to jail, two minors sent to juvenile home
Taking immediate action, the police arrested two minors in this case and sent them to a juvenile home. Meanwhile, the main accused Deepu Singh has been arrested and sent to jail in judicial custody. Dhurva police station says that further action is being taken on the basis of video footage and other evidence. According to police officials, the role of other accused involved in the case is also being investigated and raids are being conducted for their arrest. Police has made it clear that no one will be spared in this case.
Offenses under animal cruelty law
Cruelty towards animals is considered a serious crime in Indian law. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, there is a provision of imprisonment of up to two years, fine or both for killing an animal or causing serious harm to it. Apart from this, action can also be taken under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Such cases have come to light earlier also
It is noteworthy that even before this, in the month of April, a case of a dog being shot dead had come to light in Tatisilwe area of Ranchi. Pradeep Pandey, accused in that incident, was arrested and sent to jail. This incident in Dhurva is once again raising questions on the safety of animals, effective implementation of the law and lack of sensitivity in the society. Police say that strict action will be taken against the culprits under the law and efforts will be made to strictly stop such incidents.
