According to Garuda Purana, when a debtor dies, the messengers of Yamraj torture him a lot on the way while taking him to Yamaloka. It is believed that those who knowingly embezzle the money of others, despite having the power, have to face the terrible fire and sufferings of hell. There the soul does not find peace until its accounts are settled.
Have to become a servant or an animal in the next life

It is written in Garuda Purana that if a person dies without repaying the loan, then in the next life he has to be born in the house of the same person from whom he had taken the money. He can be born as a servant or slave in that house. Or else he has to come to that house in the form of a bull, horse or any other animal. He serves that person his entire life and repays the debt of his previous life through hard work. Only when the service equivalent to the loan amount is completed, the soul is freed from that bondage.
Even charity and charity do not help
Garuda Purana also warns that if someone's rights (money) are owed to you, then you will not get the full results of the charity done by you. First that fruit goes to repay that debt. Therefore it is said in the scriptures that a person should be freed from all his worldly debts (debts) before his death.
