Jagran Correspondent, Dehradun: After the heavy rains in August-September in the upper reaches of Tons River, the Army has averted the threat to Doon's Jalvayu Vihar Residential Colony Jhajhra due to sudden rise in the water level of the river, strong current and continuous bank erosion.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, the civil administration sought cooperation from the Indian Army. After this, the Engineer Regiment of the Army's Golden Key Division was immediately deployed in the affected area. Amid challenging weather, strong currents and unstable banks, Army Engineers took charge and started flood control work and completed the diversion channel. During the heavy monsoon rains, the situation had become such that at any time the river water could flow towards the colony, increasing the possibility of major loss of life and property. The army team planned to control the flow of the river with the help of special equipment and heavy machines.

Under this, a diversion channel about two hundred meters long was prepared, due to which the main flow of Tons River was diverted away from Jalvayu Vihar Colony. This technically accurate and well planned action reduced the river pressure to a great extent around the residential area.

Major General (retired) PS Rana, resident of Jalvayu Vihar, said that after the construction of the diversion channel, the speed of the river has been controlled and the erosion on the weak banks has also stopped. This has not only averted the danger of flood, but has also protected the houses and other civil structures in the colony.

According to Major General Rana, this operation is once again an example of the professional efficiency, technical capability and quick response of the Indian Army in times of disaster. Along with national security responsibilities, the Army remains at the forefront of humanitarian assistance in every disaster and works shoulder to shoulder with the civil administration to ensure the safety of the common people.
