Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi government what steps it has taken to ensure compliance with the 2023 notification regarding fares charged by auto rickshaw and taxi drivers in the national capital.
A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela also asked the authorities how many challans they have issued to auto rickshaw and taxi drivers for violating rules while charging fares. On the petition related to the case, the bench issued notice to the Delhi Government, Transport Department and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and directed them to file the status report.
The petition seeks a direction to implement the notification among all auto rickshaw drivers immediately or within a month. During the hearing, the bench said that the government should tell in its status report how many challans have been issued. It should also be told what is the standard operating procedure of the government and what is the grievance redressal mechanism.
The court gave the above comments and instructions while hearing the petition filed by advocate Anil Nimesh. In this, the issue of overcharging by auto rickshaw drivers and not taking fare as per fare meter was raised. Under the 2023 notification, the Delhi government had fixed the fares charged by auto rickshaw and taxi operators in the national capital.
The petition alleged that auto drivers charge fare as per their demand and if a passenger refuses to pay, they refuse to provide the ride. The petition said that the petitioner had filed his first complaint with the government authorities in October 2024, but they failed to maintain law and order.
