Students protest against UGC rules continues in JNU. video grab
Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Student Union in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University is continuing its protest demanding implementation of UGC rules. At the same time, Delhi Police has put up barricades to stop the students inside the campus.
They had called for a long march from the campus to the Education Ministry, but were stopped by the Delhi Police after the JNU administration denied them permission for the march. During this, the protest turned violent and many police personnel were injured.
More than 40 students detained
Supporters of leftist student organizations along with student union officials President Aditi Mishra, Vice President Gopika K Babu, General Secretary Sunil Yadav, Joint Secretary Danish Ali and former President Nitish Kumar tried to remove the barricade and go out. As soon as these students started crossing the main gate, the police took immediate action and took them into custody. According to police sources, around 40 to 50 students have been detained so far, while a crowd of two to three thousand people had gathered at the spot.
At the same time, during the demonstration, students held posters and banners in their hands and raised slogans like Jai Bhim, implement Rohit Act, down with VC, dismiss casteist VC and implement UGC Act. Student union president Aditi Mishra alleged that they were carrying out a peaceful march, but people present without uniform dragged them and detained them. Student leaders claim that hundreds of policemen had surrounded the entire campus and did not allow them to come out.
