Digital Desk, New Delhi. The election results of the country's largest Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have completely changed the scenario of Maharashtra politics. In Mumbai, BJP showed its political strength by emerging as the largest party by winning 89 out of 227 wards.
BJP is celebrating the party's emergence as the largest party in the municipal body. With this historic victory, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has become a stalwart of Maharashtra politics. A day after the election results were declared, posters describing Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as 'Dhurandhar Devendra' were put up in several parts of Mumbai on Saturday.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha Mumbai President Tajinder Singh Tiwana has got this poster installed in Mumbai. Tajinder Singh Tiwana himself has been elected corporator in these municipal elections. Huge hoardings praising Fadnavis' leadership were seen across the city, reflecting the celebratory mood in the party camp after BJP's stellar performance.
According to official data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and BMC, the BJP won 89 seats and secured 11,79,273 votes, which is 21.58 per cent of the total votes polled. Among all the winning candidates, BJP's vote share stood at 45.22 per cent, making it the largest party in the civic body.
Its alliance partner, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) won 29 seats with 2,73,326 votes, giving Shiv Sena 5.00 percent of the total vote share. Together, the BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance emerged as the largest alliance in BMC.
Shiv Sena (UBT) 65 seats
At the same time, Shiv Sena (UBT), contesting the elections in alliance with MNS, won 65 seats. UBT-led Shiv Sena got 7,17,736 votes, which is 13.13 percent of the total votes polled. MNS added 6 seats to the alliance's account, getting 74,946 votes and 1.37 percent vote share. The Indian National Congress (INC) won 24 seats, polling 2,42,646 votes, which is 4.44 percent of the total vote share.
Among other parties, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won 8 seats with 68,072 votes. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 3 seats, Samajwadi Party won 2 seats, and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 1 seat.
The winning candidates of recognized political parties received 26,07,612 votes. This is 47.72 percent of the total votes cast. A total of 54,64,412 votes were cast in the election, while 11,677 voters opted for NOTA. The alliance played a decisive role in deciding the final outcome of the BMC elections.
