Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Mexican Military has killed the dreaded drug smuggler and powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) 'El Mencho'.
The Mexican military, along with American intelligence, planned to kill El Mencho. For this, a mystery girl was kept under watch, through which the Mexican military reached El Mencho.
How was El Mencho killed?
Mexican authorities said on Monday, February 23, that Nemesio was the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Known as El Mencho, he was executed on Sunday.
Mexican Defense Secretary General Ricardo Trevila provided information about the operation by Mexican Special Forces and US intelligence. After several shootouts, eight gunmen were killed and drug smuggler El Mencho and two of his bodyguards were wounded, Trevila said.
Trevila said they were all taken into custody, but died on the way to Mexico City. After this operation, members of El Mencho's cartel instigated violence.
More than 70 people have died so far during this operation and violence, including security forces, suspected cartel members and others.
How did the Mexican military locate El Mencho?
Both Mexico and the United States have spent years tracking El Mencho. Several arrest warrants were issued against this drug smuggler for organized crime and drug trafficking in both the countries.
Trevila reported that military investigators identified a confidant of one of El Mencho's romantic partners and began pursuing her. The man took the woman to Tapalpa, Jalisco, to meet a drug lord on Friday.
The military officer said that important information received from US Intelligence provided accurate information about El Mencho. When the woman left after spending the night with El Mencho, the Special Forces executed their plan.
Mexican Army and National Guard units cordoned off the ground. Six helicopters and special forces were deployed in the states bordering Jalisco.
Trevila said the operation began on Sunday morning after El Mencho's presence was confirmed. Throughout the mission, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was kept updated on developments during her tour of northern Mexico.
