State Bureau, New Delhi. Delhi government will bring a policy for registration and monitoring of e-rickshaws. Illegal e-rickshaws will also be included in this policy. Such e-rickshaws will also be given a chance for registration. After the policy is finalized, the monitoring system will be further strengthened.
In view of the increasing number of e-rickshaws in the capital, the Delhi government is now considering adopting a strict stance. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has hinted about this several times. The aim of the government is to save the livelihood of e-rickshaw drivers and also ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians.
What will be the new rule?
The policy may include rules like e-rickshaw registration, driver regulation, passenger safety, parking arrangements and infrastructure. These rules will be implemented to ensure systematic operation of e-rickshaws. A meeting is expected to be held by the end of this month regarding the policy of regularization of e-rickshaw.
While drafting the policy, opinions will be taken from various stakeholders including RWAs, e-rickshaw operators, citizens, transport department officials and traffic police.
It is worth noting that till last January, 204,131 e-rickshaws were registered in Delhi, but the total number is estimated to be much higher. The number of illegal or unregistered e-rickshaws is more than one lakh. There is a ban on running e-rickshaws on 236 roads in Delhi.
Traffic police and transport departments often take action against illegal e-rickshaws, and have also made it a rule to scrap them. The speed of e-rickshaw should not exceed 25 km/h and it can seat five people including the driver. Due to safety and traffic jam concerns, the Delhi High Court has looked into regulating them as illegal e-rickshaws are causing accidents.
