Jagran correspondent, Dehradun. Cyber criminals have once again targeted an elderly couple by showing fear of the law. A retired bank officer and his wife, resident of Rishikesh, were digitally arrested for 60 days and defrauded of about Rs 69 lakh.
Both were threatened with arrest under the threat of their Aadhaar number being used in illegal transactions worth Rs 10 crore. The thugs even forced him to sell his land and property. Cyber crime police have registered a case in this matter.
81-year-old retired bank officer Bhagwat Narayan Jha and his wife Kamal Jha, residents of Ganga Residency, Ganganagar Rishikesh, told that on November 17, 2025, at around 11 am, they received a call from an unknown number on their mobile.
The callers introduced themselves as officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Cyber Crime Cell and the Supreme Court. The couple got scared when they were told that the Aadhaar number was being used in illegal transactions.
Both were kept under surveillance through WhatsApp calls and video calls by threatening arrest, property confiscation and sending them to jail. The thugs maintained complete control over the couple's daily routine for about 60 days.
They were forced not to talk to anyone, send live location, tell them sleep-wake times and follow instructions. Due to mental pressure and fear, Bhagwat Narayan Jha got the money transferred to several bank accounts mentioned by the accused.
According to the victim couple, they have suffered a loss of Rs 69 lakh in this entire conspiracy. This incident has left them mentally broken and financially ruined.
