Engine Of Flight Going From Nepal To Istanbul Caught Fire, Emergency Landing In Kolkata

State Bureau, Jagran, Kolkata. A large Turkish Airlines widebody aircraft going from Kathmandu to Istanbul had to suddenly divert towards Kolkata due to a technical fault on Wednesday afternoon.

The plane had just taken off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal when a serious fault was detected in one of its engines. Due to the intelligence and promptness of the pilots, all 236 passengers and 11 crew members on board the aircraft were saved safely.

According to airport sources, Turkish Airlines flight number THY-727 took off from Kathmandu at 1.29 pm. While climbing into the sky, the pilots got a signal that one of the two engines of the plane had stopped working.

Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the pilots immediately informed Kathmandu ATC and kept the aircraft on hold for some time over Dharke area of ​​Dhading district to assess the situation.

Kolkata's choice to avoid risk

After investigation the crew concluded that it was not safe to continue a long-haul international flight on a single engine. Although the aircraft had the option of returning to Kathmandu or landing at Bhairahawa Airport, giving priority to safety standards, the crew decided not to take any risks and diverted the aircraft towards Kolkata, India.

Kolkata-based Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport officials said the plane landed safely at the airport at 3.03 pm amid emergency protocols. After landing, the aircraft is being thoroughly inspected and alternative arrangements are being considered for the passengers. There were a total of 236 passengers and 11 crew members on board the plane, who are completely safe.
