ANI, New Delhi. We all know that exercising is extremely beneficial for our body, but do you know that it can also protect our brain from serious diseases like Alzheimer's? Researchers at the University of San Francisco have identified a new biological process that makes it clear why physical activity improves our ability to think and remember. This research shows that exercise not only keeps the body but also the mind young.
How does the brain weaken with age?
There is a special layer to protect our brain which is called blood-brain barrier. It is a complex network of blood vessels, which normally prevents harmful substances present in the blood from reaching the brain.
But, as we age, this protective layer weakens and begins to leak. Due to this leakage, harmful proteins from the blood easily enter the brain tissues. These harmful proteins cause inflammation in the brain, which is directly linked to decline in intellectual ability and diseases like Alzheimer's.
How does exercise repair the brain?
This is where exercise works like a charm! According to research, physical activity strengthens this built-in defense mechanism of the brain. When we exercise, our body stimulates the liver to release (secrete) a certain enzyme. This enzyme destroys harmful proteins that damage the brain. In addition, exercise sharpens the brain by repairing this protective layer of the brain, which significantly slows down the process of weakening of the brain with increasing age.
A new hope for the future
To understand this process better, researchers also studied rats. This research found that when the amount of this harmful protein in the body was reduced, inflammation in the brains of rats reduced and their memory improved significantly. This is a very important discovery, because it can help in finding new and better treatments for Alzheimer's and other brain problems that occur with age in the future.
