Varanasi: Three-time medal winning wrestler Nidhi Singh committed suicide.
Jagran correspondent, (Mirzamurad) Varanasi. Nidhi Singh (23) consumed poison (sulfas) due to some issue in Thatra village (Kachwan Road). He died during treatment at BHU Trauma Center on Friday morning. Lanka Police conducted post-mortem of the dead body. The deceased continued to wrestle and had won the silver medal thrice. According to family members, the reason for consuming sulfas could not be clarified.
Late resident of Thatra village of Mirzamurad. Nidhi Singh, daughter of Shriprakash alias Munna Singh, a BA student, was wrestling since 2018. She had also won silver medal thrice in Under-19 wrestling. After initially practicing by joining Kachwan Akhara, she started practicing by joining the Akharas of the district and kept going out to participate in wrestling competitions at the state level.
Last Wednesday afternoon, angry over some incident in the family, Nidhi consumed sulfas kept in the house. After consuming sulfas, she also called her friend. The friend called the wrestler's younger sister and told her about consuming sulfas. Brother Shivam immediately took him to Prakash Hospital in Kachhwanrod, from where he was sent to BHU Trauma Centre.
Deceased Nidhi's father Shriprakash died in an accident many years ago due to overturning of a tractor and mother Mamta due to illness. She was the second among one brother and three sisters. As soon as the news of death broke, there was chaos in the family. The elderly grandfather Matadayal Singh and grandmother Shyama Devi, who took care of the family, kept crying. On receiving the information, Kachwanrod police post in-charge Ramchandra Yadav reached the house of the deceased and conducted investigation. Mirzamurad police station in-charge Pramod Pandey said that no complaint has been received yet regarding the incident.
The uncle of the deceased had committed suicide by shooting himself. The uncle of the deceased Nidhi, Shivprakash Singh alias Chhunna, had committed suicide by shooting himself with a licensed pistol on the day of Holi in the year 2024. Farming is the main source of income in the family.
