Digital Desk, New Delhi. A heart-wrenching incident took place on Saturday afternoon at the prestigious Brown University located in Rhode Island, America. During the final exam, a person in black clothes started firing indiscriminately in the engineering building. Two people lost their lives and eight others were seriously injured in this attack. The attacker is still absconding and the police is busy searching for him.
The incident occurred at the Barus & Holley Building. This building is part of the University's School of Engineering and Physics Department. Engineering design exams were going on here. As soon as information about the firing was received, there was panic in the campus. The university immediately issued an alert and advised students to close doors, silence phones and hide.
The attacker is being searched everywhere
Providence City Deputy Chief of Police Timothy O'Hara said the attacker was a male wearing black clothing. He ran away from the building towards Hope Street. Even three-four hours after the shooting, police were still searching campus buildings and the surrounding area. Mayor Brett Smiley said at a press conference that the injured were in serious but stable condition. They are all admitted to Rhode Island Hospital. The mayor also said that efforts are being made to catch the attacker by deploying all resources.
Shelter-in-place orders remain in place on campus and surrounding areas. People have been asked to stay in their homes and not go out. The FBI is also assisting in the investigation. The mayor declined to provide further details about the victims, but said it was a very sad day for the city and the state.
atmosphere of panic among students
According to NDTV, the student said he was working on a project in his dorm just across the street from the incident site. He got scared as soon as he heard the sound of sirens and got the alert of active shooter.
Other students said that as soon as they got the alert in the nearby lab, they hid under the desk and switched off the lights. The entire campus was silent and scared. University Provost Francis Doyle said that it is very terrible for all this to happen during the exam time. They are finding out who was in the building at that time.
'We can only pray'
President Donald Trump was given a briefing on the incident. At the White House he said that right now we can only pray for the victims. On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that he has received information about the Brown University shooting and the FBI is on the spot.
Vice President JD Vance posted on Twitter that there was very bad news from Rhode Island. They are monitoring the situation and the FBI is ready to assist. He appealed for prayers for everyone.
