State Bureau, Shimla. 18 seater tempo travels will run on 350 routes across the state. The Transport Department amended its old orders and issued new orders on Tuesday. Instructions have been issued by the director of the department to all the RTOs of the district. According to the department, the government has approved 350 stage carriage route permits for operation of 18 seater stage carriage vehicles in the private sector.
The department has directed that under the Motor Vehicle Act, 18 seater tempo travelers and 18 seater buses will fall in the category of stage carriage vehicles provided they follow the Act and rules. Operators can purchase and operate 18 seater tempo travelers such as Force Tempo Traveler based on the allotted route permit. 18 seater buses manufactured by Tata, Suzuki or other companies can also be run under the permit.
The condition of two doors will be applicable for 18 seater buses. The seating capacity of any vehicle should not exceed 18 passengers excluding the driver. No RTO will allow a vehicle with a capacity of more than 18 seats to be registered or operated under these permits. No operator will be forced to purchase only Tempo Traveller.
He can also buy an 18 seater bus as per the rules. The conditions of permit letters already issued will be amended as necessary. The department has instructed motor vehicle inspectors to ensure that these instructions are followed at the time of vehicle registration, fitness and permit endorsement.
