Due to worsening of the condition due to pollution in the city, 245 patients have reached the emergency ward and ICU of the district hospital for treatment within three months. The age of all the patients is between 45 to 80 years. Doctors say that due to the effect of PM 2.5 particles, the breathing tubes get narrowed due to which oxygen is not taken easily. Lives of 189 patients were saved by giving them nebulizer and oxygen in case of breathing problems, while 56 patients were suffering from other diseases. At the same time, due to pollution, the number of patients suffering from problems like cough, breathlessness, wheezing etc. in private hospitals has increased by 40 percent.

Need to provide nebulizer and oxygen support

ICU in-charge in the district hospital, Dr. Asad Mahmood told that the patients who already have asthma. As pollution increased, they faced more problems. Due to narrowing of the respiratory tract the oxygen level fell below 80. His relatives immediately brought him to the emergency ward. Statistics show that in three months, 245 patients have come with respiratory problems. He was immediately cured by giving first aid. The remaining 150 patients needed nebulizer and oxygen support.

Only old patients are coming for consultation

The elderly women and men were given oxygen and medicines through nebulizer and sent home after improvement. Whereas, Dean of Child PGI, Dr. DK Singh says that due to pollution new patients are not coming to OPD. Because most of the children are at home due to closure of schools and colleges. Their sports and outdoor activities are closed. Only old patients are coming to the asthma clinic for consultation.

Chest tightness patients increased by 40 percent

Dr. of Pulmonology Department at Yatharth Hospital. Arunachalam M says that patients suffering from symptoms like cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing have increased by 40 percent. Such patients have also come forward who did not have lung related disease in the past, but due to pollution, symptoms have developed. During the tests, it was seen that those who did not have any respiratory disease earlier, are now coming with lung related complaints. He has cough, throat irritation, breathing problems and wheezing. All these cases are related to the effects of polluted air.

According to him, cases of cough, allergic bronchitis and asthma attacks are increasing in children. Young and middle-aged working people have increased complaints of difficulty in breathing, reduced lung capacity and irritation in the airways. Symptoms are being seen in working women along with men. The special thing is that the demand for pulmonary function test and other lung tests is increasing in OPD.

The demand for PFT has increased by 20 to 30 percent. He warned that security personnel, construction workers and street vendors work in the open throughout the day. People traveling in traffic daily, school-college students and office goers are getting more affected by pollution.
