Hemant Soren Discusses Jharkhand-Oxford Educational Cooperation, Students Will Get New Opportunities

State Bureau, Ranchi. Chief Minister Hemant Soren visited All Souls College, Oxford University, London. On this occasion, Professor Alpa Shah, Department of Anthropology at Oxford University, welcomed the Jharkhand delegation.

During the meeting held thereafter, possibilities of deepening academic cooperation between Jharkhand and Oxford were discussed.

This included the possibility of new doctoral scholarships for Jharkhand students, research opportunities, faculty exchanges and joint research initiatives in areas such as climate change, sustainable development, tribal welfare and heritage that can support the efforts of the state government.

The Chief Minister underlined Jharkhand's commitment towards investment in education, research and global academic partnerships. The Chief Minister especially talked about supporting young researchers with the aim of strengthening the educational institutions of the state.

In this sequence, the Chief Minister paid tribute to the former President of India, great philosopher and politician Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Radhakrishnan has a deep connection

Dr. Radhakrishnan was a towering figure in the intellectual history of India and has deep intellectual ties to St. John's and Oxford. The Chief Minister recalled Dr. Radhakrishnan's long and distinguished association with Oxford.

In 1936, Dr. Radhakrishnan was appointed Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford and was elected a Fellow of All Souls College. He held this post till 1952. After this, he was an Honorary Fellow of All Souls College from 1952 to 1975.

While at Oxford, Dr. Radhakrishnan was widely respected as an outstanding philosopher and bridge between Eastern and Western traditions of thought. He was knighted by King George V in 1931 for his contributions to education.

After visiting All Souls College, the delegation also visited the historic Radcliffe Camera located at the heart of Oxford University. This famous circular library, built in the 18th century, is an important part of the Bodleian Library and is considered a symbol of learning, research and intellectual tradition throughout the world.

The visit is seen as an important step towards building a long-term collaboration between Jharkhand and Oxford, which is based on shared intellectual traditions and forward-looking academic engagement and is strongly aligned with the vision of the UK-India 2035 partnership.
