Digital Desk, Indore. The increasing pollution in Narmada River, which is considered a stream of faith, has raised serious questions. Despite spending crores of rupees and declaring many cities as holy cities, the situation is such that the water of Narmada is not even potable in Mandleshwar of Khargone district. This fact was recently accepted in the Assembly also.
Pollution many times more than the prescribed standards
According to investigation reports, the contaminated water reaching the river through drains is 4 to 10 times more polluted than the prescribed standards. The amounts of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and suspended solids have been recorded at worrying levels.
Same situation in holy cities also
Maheshwar, Mandleshwar and Omkareshwar have the status of holy cities, but from here the water of dirty drains is directly flowing into Narmada. The pollution situation in Barwah-Sanavad, Khargone, Khandwa and Barwani areas has also been said to be serious.
STP on paper, incomplete work on ground
Sewage treatment plants (STP) are proposed in six urban bodies and construction has also been done at some places, but till now not a single plant has been able to operate at full capacity. Even in spite of having STP on Kunda river in Khargone, the filth from the drains is directly reaching Narmada.

Notices and Court Actions
Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board has issued multiple notices to the six bodies concerned and had also demanded compensation of Rs 42.50 crore. However, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted relief to the civic bodies from compensation. At present, complaints are pending in the court against these bodies.
The growing gap between faith and environmental protection has once again raised the question as to when the claims of keeping the river considered sacred will be implemented.
