Editorial: Stopping Trump's Arbitrariness, US Supreme Court Showed Its Arrogance

The US Supreme Court declared the tariffs imposed by President Trump on many countries including India illegal, thereby curbing his arbitrariness. The decision is a major political blow to Trump, especially ahead of the midterm elections. However, Trump immediately issued an executive order imposing a 10% tariff. The article warns that Trump may take unexpected steps, and India needs to be cautious of them.

The US Supreme Court declared Trump's tariffs illegal.

This is a political blow for Trump, before the midterm elections.

India will have to be cautious of Trump's unpredictable policies.

President Trump, who boasted that I love tariffs and that's my favorite word, has been shot down by the US Supreme Court. He declared the tariffs imposed by the US President on various countries including India as illegal. The special thing is that those two judges of the Supreme Court, who were appointed by him himself, considered Trump's tariff policy to be beyond their jurisdiction. This shows how Trump was engaged in blatant disregard for rules and regulations in the matter of tariffs.

This decision of the Supreme Court is not only deflating Trump's tariff policy, but also weakening him politically, because he was caught doing illegal work. Through his tariff policy, Trump was trying to create an atmosphere among his supporters that he was making America rich, but now they will also feel cheated and that too at a time when mid-term elections are to be held in America.

The Supreme Court's decision is going to further reduce Trump's declining popularity and he may have to suffer political losses, but it is also certain that he is not going to rest in peace. A proof of this is that just hours after the Supreme Court's decision, he issued an executive order announcing the imposition of ten percent tariff on all countries. Although its duration will be only five months, in the meantime Trump may try to resort to other measures.

Trump may impose additional tariffs on some countries by accusing America of unfair and discriminatory trade. Similarly, tariffs can also be increased on imports that pose a threat to America's security, but to implement these measures, they will have to prove through investigation that certain countries are actually following unfair trade policies or are exporting products that pose a threat to American security.

Since Trump is busy pursuing his own interests and enhancing his image under the guise of making America great again, he may take arbitrary, unpredictable and world-threatening decisions on matters other than tariffs. They can attack Iran to divert the attention of their people. They are busy laying siege to it. They may also turn their attention to Cuba and some other countries. In any case, India will have to be wary of them even if an interim trade agreement is reached with the US, because they are no longer trustworthy.
