State Bureau, Kolkata. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday approached the office of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujay Pal. ED demands that the case related to the obstruction during the search in the I-PAC office should be heard soon.

Actually, the case was to be heard in the court of Justice Shubhra Ghosh on Friday, but due to excessive crowd, the judge left the court without hearing it and adjourned the case till January 14.

ED seeks immediate hearing on obstruction in I-pack raid

Dissatisfied with the adjournment of the hearing, the ED has appealed to the Chief Justice that if the hearing is not possible in Justice Ghosh's court, then the case should be transferred to some other bench.

The office of the Chief Justice has directed the ED to submit its demand in writing, following which the ED has submitted a written application for urgent hearing.

The controversy started on Thursday when the ED raided the I-PAC office in Salt Lake and the Loudon Street residence of its chief Prateek Jain in connection with the investigation into the illegal coal smuggling case. I-PAC is an advisory body to the state government.

The Chief Minister was seriously accused of obstructing the investigation.

As soon as the news of the raid was received, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself reached the spot. ED alleges that the Chief Minister took out documents, files and laptop from Prateek Jain's house during the search operation, which is being considered to hinder the investigation.

ED has argued in the court that this search operation is completely related to coal smuggling and has no connection with any political party, but their work has been hampered by misuse of constitutional power.

On the other hand, Trinamool Congress has also filed a case in the High Court against the Central Government and ED. Both these cases were to be heard together on Friday.
