New Delhi. India's vegetable oil import declined by two percent to 39.6 lakh tonnes in the first quarter of oil year 2025-26. Lower purchases of soybean and sunflower oil offset the impact of increased palm oil imports.
According to the oil industry organization SEA, in the same quarter of November-January a year ago, the country had imported 40.5 lakh tonnes of vegetable oil (including edible and non-edible).
Palm oil – In the quarter from November 2025 to January 2026, palm oil imports increased by 18 percent to 19.1 lakh tonnes, which was 16.2 lakh tonnes a year ago. The stock of palm oil at ports on February 1 stood at 4.86 lakh tonnes, which is 33,000 tonnes more than the previous month.
Soybean Oil - During the period under review, the import of crude soybean oil declined by nine percent to 12 lakh tonnes, while the port stock decreased from three lakh tonnes to 1.90 lakh tonnes. During this period, the import of crude sunflower oil fell by 15 percent to 7.59 lakh tonnes while its port stock was recorded at 1.85 lakh tonnes.

Nepal exported about 54,000 tonnes of refined oil to India in November 2025, while the figure stood at about 48,000 tonnes in December. Total edible oil stocks at Indian ports as on February 1 this year stood at 8.64 lakh tonnes, while pipeline stocks including domestic production and consumption stood at 8.85 lakh tonnes. Its total reserves remained stable at 17.5 lakh tonnes. Indonesia and Malaysia are the major exporters of palm oil to India.
