Jagran correspondent, Baharampur. In a heart-warming and unprecedented example of inclusivity, members of the transgender community played the role of parents in the traditional Kanyadaan ritual at a mass wedding ceremony held in Berhampur. This first event of its kind in the region gave a powerful message of social harmony and equality.

A festive atmosphere was seen in this grand mass wedding ceremony organized by Kanha Charitable Trust. Amidst the beats of drums, the sound of firecrackers, folk dances and melodious songs, 15 couples got married. All these youth were from families who had the courage to choose life partners despite social and economic challenges.

The most emotional and symbolic moment of the ceremony came when members of the transgender community performed the sacred Kanyadaan ritual, playing the role of parents to some of the brides.

Kanyadaan is considered one of the most sacred acts in the Hindu marriage tradition. This initiative also allowed brides who were deprived of family resources or support to experience the affection and blessings of their parents.

The event has been happening for many years

The Trust has been working for a long time to facilitate marriages of economically weak and deprived youth. The needy couples are provided with complete arrangements of marriage, facility to get it solemnized with traditional Brahmin rituals and other necessary support. Over the years the Trust has provided the opportunity for a new beginning in the lives of many couples.

The active participation of the transgender community in the event was appreciated by the local people and social observers. Attendees said that this initiative is an important step towards breaking social barriers and strengthening the spirit of equality.

The newlywed couples were selected months in advance. Everyone took marital vows with full traditional Hindu rituals. After the marriage, a mass banquet was organized in the presence of family members, well-wishers and volunteers of the Trust.

Such initiatives not only support the economically weaker sections to start a new life, but also strengthen the spirit of mutual harmony, respect and inclusivity in the society.
