Jagran correspondent, Meerut. The story of Metro Rail is not just about transport, but also tells the story of technology, convenience and the changing face of the city. This journey of Metro in the country started from Kolkata in 1984. Now it has reached 27 cities of the country.
Sunday is not only the day of inauguration of the metro but also a day of introspection, the district also needs a metro. Every year 67 thousand new vehicles are coming on the road here. The number of private vehicles has reached 12 lakh and the number of commercial vehicles has reached 83 thousand, while the roads are the same, the traffic has increased manifold. At the same time, the ground reality is that it takes as much time to reach from Partapur to Begumpul as it takes to reach Delhi from Partapur. Officials believe that the operation of Metro will provide relief to the traffic on Delhi Road.
Underground metro was started in Kolkata in 1984. After that, Metro came to Delhi in 2002. Nine years later, in 2011, Bengaluru also became a metro city. Metro was also started in the country's financial capital Mumbai in 2014. Metro was started in Jaipur and Chennai in 2015 and Lucknow, Hyderabad and Kochi in 2017, Nagpur in 2019, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar of Gujarat, Kanpur in 2021, Pune in 2022, Agra in 2024, Indore, Patna and Bhopal in 2025.
Metro has also been started in Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra of the state, Ghaziabad of Delhi NCR, Gurugram, Noida and Jaipur of Rajasthan. Metro is going to run in the district in 2026. With the operation of Metro here, there is hope that there will be a big change in the traffic on Delhi Road. Looking at the crowd of passengers at Meerut South station, it seems that similar crowd will be seen at all the 12 stations also. In such a situation, there is hope of getting a big relief to the traffic on Delhi Road.
SSP Avinash Pandey said that the face of the city will change due to change in traffic from metro. There has been a lot of change in traffic due to the running of metro in Agra, Lucknow and Kanpur. That change will be seen in the district also. Autos and e-rickshaws will now be limited to the streets of the locality instead of Delhi Road. This means that the work of taking the passengers alighting from the metro to their homes in the locality will remain.
