Jagran Bureau, New Delhi. Bangladesh has started new relations by inviting India to the swearing-in ceremony of the new Prime Minister. This invitation from Bangladesh is also important in the sense that during the tenure of Mohammad Yunus, relations between the two countries had soured.

During the time of Yunus, atrocities were also committed against minority Hindus, due to which India remained uncomfortable. Now, by inviting India to the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, Bangladesh has taken a positive step towards improving the derailed relations.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the new government led by BNP President Tariq Rehman on February 17. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the participation of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in this important event underlines the enduring friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh.

It also reiterates India's unwavering commitment to the democratic values that bind the two countries. As a neighbor bound by shared history, culture and mutual respect, India welcomes the elected government under the leadership of Tariq Rehman, which has been given an overwhelming mandate by the people.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will also visit Dhaka to strengthen India's representation at the event. The Foreign Secretary can hold a meeting with the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh there, in which bilateral relations can be discussed. When Om Birla meets the new Prime Minister Tariq Rehman, the Foreign Secretary will be present with him.

This high-level delegation is a clear indication of the priority India places on relations. Bangladesh had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the swearing-in ceremony, but on February 17, he will be busy meeting French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai.

The Central Government has sent a message to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Foreign Secretary that India does not want to delay in normalizing and strengthening its relations with Bangladesh. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had spoken to Tariq Rehman on phone while congratulating him on his election victory, which was the first sign of positive engagement between the two countries. Modi congratulated him on the victory and reiterated his commitment to strong bilateral relations.

India sees change in Bangladesh as a positive opportunity

After the election victory of BNP, a period of political change has started in Bangladesh and India is seeing this as a positive opportunity. There is hope to further cooperation between the two countries on issues like trade, security, water-sharing and regional stability.

Even after the election results, some BNP leaders have raised the issue of former PM Sheikh Hasina taking refuge in India and what attitude the new government takes towards this issue will largely decide the direction of relations between the two countries. Besides, India would also like a guarantee from the Tariq Rahman government that like before, Bangladesh will not be allowed to become a hub of anti-India activities during the tenure of BNP.
