A full judicial inquiry into the claims and objections in the voter list under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bengal will begin from Monday. 150 sessions judges and 250 judicial officers appointed by the Calcutta High Court have been deployed in this system.

A three-member committee constituted by the High Court in each district will monitor this process. The committee will include the district judge, district magistrate and concerned district police officers. A source in the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office said the focus is on completing the verification of cases placed in the logical anomaly category by February 28, which have been sent to judicial authorities.

Final list will be released on 28th February

It has currently been decided that the final voter list in Bengal will be published as scheduled on February 28, but excluding the documents of those voters, which have been sent for judicial scrutiny. Supplementary lists will be published later.

It is estimated that documents of about 45 to 50 lakh voters will come under judicial scrutiny, mainly in logical discrepancy cases. In this regard, judges and representatives of the Election Commission attended the meeting held at Jessop Bhawan in Kolkata on Sunday.

A special panel of seven retired judges

Following the Supreme Court's strong stance in the matter, Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujay Pal had called a high-level meeting, in which it was decided to constitute a special panel of seven retired judges. This panel will deal with complex matters and logical discrepancies before the publication of the final voter list.
