Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Mexican military killed Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, better known as 'El Mencho', the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
El Mencho's death could prove to be a big deal for the government's anti-cartel campaign. Along with this, the Mexican Military also has a big victory to show to the Trump Administration.
Who was El Mencho?
El Mencho was one of the most wanted drug smugglers in the world. The Mexican military has killed cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aka El Mencho.
Mexico's Defense Ministry has also confirmed the death of El Mencho. El Mencho himself was previously a police officer. But in the last 10 years, El Mencho's organization Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has become Mexico's most dangerous drug trafficking organization.
El Mencho's cartel has been accused of smuggling large quantities of drugs into the US, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Lakhs of deaths have occurred in recent years due to overdose of this drug.
Mexican military operations have triggered violent retaliation in the states. Cartel members set vehicles on fire, blocked highways and spread panic across Mexico on a large scale.
Cities like Guadalajara were evacuated. Here people are hiding inside their homes. Apart from this, schools have also been closed in many states.
Situation worsened in Mexico
Mexican military officials have reported several deaths. Cartel gunmen killed security personnel in Tapalpa, Zapopan, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
Many soldiers have also been injured in this violence, due to which many suspects have been arrested. After this, amidst the chaos and unrest, the military seized heavy weapons including armored vehicles and rocket launchers.
