Law correspondent, Lucknow. Justice Pankaj Bhatia of Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court is hurt by a harsh comment of the Supreme Court. He said that the Supreme Court's comments were discouraging and had a negative impact on him. Saying this, he refused to hear the bail petitions on Friday.

Justice Pankaj Bhatia has requested the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court that he should not be allowed to hear bail petitions in future. He said this during the hearing on the second bail application of accused Rakesh Tiwari.

As soon as this matter came up for hearing before him, he took cognizance of the serious comments made against him by the Supreme Court on 9 February 2026 in the case of Chetram Verma.

He said that the bail order given by him in another case was challenged before the Supreme Court, which quashed his order, which is normal, because no judge can claim that any of his orders has never been set aside or interfered with by a higher court, but the observations made against him by the Supreme Court in the said case are demoralizing and intimidating.

Bail granted in dowry death case

In fact, a single bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia had granted bail to the accused husband on October 10, 2025 in a dowry death case. In this case the woman died due to strangulation. Due to the order of the High Court, the victim plaintiff Chetram Verma had challenged the bail order in the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court observed that the reason given for Justice Bhatia's order was only that the accused husband was in jail since July 27, 2025 and he had no criminal history.

On this, the Supreme Court, while rejecting the said bail order, had commented that the said order is one of the most disappointing orders that we have seen in recent times.

The Supreme Court had also said that what does the High Court want to say by the said order? Where has he used his discretion and granted bail only on the basis of the arguments of the defense and the period spent by the accused in jail? Saying this, the Supreme Court had rejected the bail order of the High Court.
