Digital Desk, New Delhi. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that names of lakhs of "doubtful voters" have been removed during the Special Revision (SR) of the electoral voter list in the state. “This is just the beginning,” he said. When the Special Intensive Review (SIR) is conducted, names of more people will be removed.

Chief Minister Sarma said in a press conference on Wednesday that many of these removed names were based on complaints made by BJP workers. The comments come on a day when the Election Commission published the final voter list for Assam, in which 2.43 lakh names have been removed from the draft list.

“Our party members lodged complaints as much as possible,” he said. Names have been removed on the basis of these complaints. Sarma claimed that for the first time after the signing of the Assam Accord, such a large number of names were removed from the voter list. Some people tried to threaten us. But we were successful. Our BJP workers were successful in convincing the booth level officials that those against whom complaints were lodged are no longer residents.

"The war against illegal Bangladeshi Muslims will continue," he said. At the end of the complaints and objections, the final electoral list was published on Tuesday, which has a total of 2.49 crore voters, a reduction of 0.97 per cent from the draft list.

The CM had earlier hinted that only 'Miyas' (illegal Bangladeshi Muslims in the local language) were being served notices during the SR process to put them under pressure and said that more than five lakh complaints had been filed by BJP workers against "illegal Bangladeshis".
