Digital Desk, Mumbai. Voting for the posts of president and city council and nagar panchayat members across Maharashtra ended on Saturday, and is now awaiting counting. Counting of votes will start at around 10 am today. Although BMC elections are in the middle of January, the results of these elections will be no less than a litmus test for parties like BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS.
47.04 percent voting was recorded
According to news agency PTI, voting ended around 5.30 pm, with voting taking place for 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayat posts as well as 143 vacant posts. The State Election Commission said polling began at 7.30 am and 47.04 percent voting was recorded till noon.
In Nashik, where 49.47 per cent voting was recorded in Sinnar, Ojhar and Chandvad, an incident of rigging was also reported. In Ward No. 2 of Sinnar, a 25-year-old man was detained for trying to cast his vote by impersonating his brother using a fake Aadhaar card.
BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena contested elections separately.
This time the elections of Dondaicha Municipal Council and Angar Nagar Panchayat were held unopposed, and there was also no contest in the election of Jammer Municipal President. These elections saw the ruling coalition's allies, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP, contest against each other.
This electoral battle saw a fierce fight between the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), interspersed with cordial contests between these alliances.
Counting of votes will start from 10 am
The counting of votes for all 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, including those that went to polls in the first phase on December 2, will begin at 10 am on December 21, the State Election Commission said.
