Meeting to finalize India-US Trade Deal postponed, will India negotiate now?
New Delhi. The meeting to finalize the trade agreement between India and America has been rescheduled. This information was given by sources.
According to a report by news agency PTI, sources said on Sunday that India and the US have decided to reschedule the proposed meeting of their chief negotiators in Washington to finalize the text of the interim trade pact (India US Trade Deal). The Indian team was to start the three-day meeting on February 23. But now it has been rescheduled.
The meeting will be rescheduled with mutual consent.
PTI quoted a source as saying, "Regarding the US visit of the team of Indian negotiators for the India-US trade deal, both sides are of the view that the proposed visit of the Indian Chief Negotiator and the team should be scheduled after both sides get time to understand the latest developments and their implications. The meeting will be rescheduled at a mutually agreed date."
Trump increased global tariff from 10 to 15 percent
This development is necessary following the US Supreme Court's decision against the Trump Administration's earlier major tariffs. After the Supreme Court's decision to cancel the tariff, Trump on Friday imposed 10 percent tariff on all countries including India for 150 days from February 24. On Saturday he announced to increase the duty to 15 percent.
In a 6–3 decision, the Court held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give the President the authority to impose large-scale tariffs under emergency powers. This decision invalidated a large portion of the country-specific duties imposed under the Administration's Reciprocal Tariff Framework.
For India, this is the latest change in a tariff cycle that began in early 2025, with US duties rising to 50% before being partially rolled back under an interim trade arrangement.
Trump had said- There will be no change in India-US Trade Deal
After the Supreme Court's decision, US President Donald Trump had said that there has been no change in the India-US trade deal and confirmed that tariffs on Indian exports will continue to be imposed under the changed framework.
However, the government on Saturday said India is "closely studying all the developments and implications" of the US Supreme Court's decision striking down President Donald Trump's massive tariffs across the world.
In its first statement, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said, "We have taken note of the US Supreme Court's decision on tariffs yesterday. President Trump has also held a press conference in this regard. The US administration has announced some steps."
