Digital Desk, New Delhi. Ten years ago, on February 2, 2016, a Somali suicide bomber detonated a bomb inside Dalo Airlines Flight 159 from Mogadishu to Djibouti. Only the attacker was killed in this incident and it is considered no less than a miraculous incident.
The suspected attacker was identified as Somali national Abdullahi Abdislam Borleh. He had taken the laptop computer containing the explosives on the flight. CNN quoted sources as saying in its report, the attacker knew exactly where to sit and how to place the device so that the maximum damage could be caused.
The explosion occurred 15 minutes after the flight takeoff
According to the BBC report, the explosion in the Dalo Airlines flight occurred about 15 minutes after takeoff, when the plane was at an altitude of about 11,000 feet (3,350 meters) and the cabin was not yet fully pressurized.
Somalia's Al-Shabaab group took responsibility for the attack
Apart from this, according to the report of Al Jazeera, the blast left a one meter hole in the side of the Airbus A321 and the attacker was killed. The plane had to make an emergency landing in Mogadishu. Somalia's group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and said they were targeting Western officials and Türkiye's NATO forces.
"Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen carried out the bombing in revenge for the crimes committed by a coalition of Western crusaders and their intelligence agencies against Somalia's Muslims," the group said in a statement. Airlines head Mohammad Ibrahim Yasin Olad said that the bomber was actually scheduled to board a Turkish Airlines flight, but that flight was cancelled. The 74 passengers on board the flight had originally checked in with Turkish Airlines, which flies to Somalia three times a week.
