AP, Dallas. More than 9,000 flights scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were canceled in the US due to fears of a major snow storm. This storm is expected to wreak havoc in most parts of the country, causing power outages and blockage of main roads for several days. Warnings have been issued for about 14 crore people from New Mexico to New England and emergencies have been declared in 15 states.
President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration is coordinating with state and local officials and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is fully prepared to respond quickly.
The National Weather Service said snow and sleet fell overnight Friday in North Texas. "The cold is spreading dangerously across the area and will continue till Monday," the department said on Thursday. The temperature may go down to minus 24 degrees Celsius in the next few nights.
According to CNN, two-thirds of the US population is going to face a snow storm and extreme cold. The storm's snow will cover more than 2,000 miles from Texas to New England. Snow and hail continued to occur in Oklahoma on Friday.
The weather service said the storm will move northeast after passing through the south, dropping about a foot of snow from Washington to New York and Boston. Temperatures reached minus 34 degrees Celsius just before dawn in rural Lewis County and other parts of upstate New York after several days of heavy snowfall.
Temperatures reached minus 40 degrees Celsius in the Midwest. Temperatures dropped to minus 41 degrees Celsius in Bismarck and North Dakota.
Utility companies have prepared for power outages because snow-covered trees and power lines may continue to fall long after the storm passes. The federal government has kept about 30 search and rescue teams on standby.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), officials have prepared more than 7 million food packets, six million blankets and 300 generators throughout the storm's path.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the majority of homes in at least 11 states from Texas to Virginia are heated by electricity. Five years ago a cold wave knocked out much of the power grid, leaving millions without power for days and causing hundreds of deaths.
