Nepal's daughters-in-law trapped in new rules.

Arvind Tripathi, Nautanwa. After the change in the rules in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process, the problems of the daughters-in-law of Nepal living in the India-Nepal border area have increased. Earlier, the name was registered in the voter list in the name of the husband, but under the new rules, now the SIR of the daughters-in-law of Nepal origin is not being made. Due to this, hundreds of women have reached the verge of being deprived of voting rights.

In Mudila village of Nautanwa tehsil area, 45 women are of Nepalese origin, who are married to Indian citizens. Sarita wife Akhilesh and Ramvati wife Pradeep (resident Mudila) told that they have been living in India for years, spending their entire life here with family, children and social responsibilities, but now the new rules of SIR have become a hindrance for them.

Earlier in the SIR process, the name was registered on the basis of marriage proof, husband's voter ID card and local verification. Daughters-in-law of Nepal used to be included in the voter list in the name of their husband, but now citizenship and birth related documents have been made mandatory, which are not available to the women who married from Nepal.

Under special intensive vetting, door-to-door verification by BLOs, taking documents related to identity and address from the voter, place of birth, details of parents in the form, inclusion or deletion of names in the list after scrutiny of documents, more emphasis is being laid on documents related to birth and citizenship in the new system.

India and Nepal have had an unbroken bond of bread and butter for years. Thousands of marriages have taken place between the two countries in the border areas. In such a situation, depriving the daughters-in-law of Nepal from voting rights is being said to be contrary to the spirit of this traditional relationship.

Special provision should be made for the daughters-in-law of Nepal. SIR should be allowed on the basis of marriage certificate, voter ID card of husband and local investigation, so that women living in India for years are not deprived of democratic rights.

SDM Naveen Prasad told that the parents of Nepali women are being sought which the daughters-in-law of Nepal are not able to provide, higher officials have been informed.
