Mumbai's Air Deteriorated In February, AQI Remained In Moderate Category Even After Winter; PM10 Became The Biggest Reason

Digital Desk, New Delhi. Air quality in Mumbai is generally considered to be at its worst in the months of December and January. But this time, even after winter is over, the air quality has deteriorated further in the first half of February.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the average AQI for February was 121, which falls in the 'moderate' category. In comparison, the average AQI of January was 107 and the average of December was 118. In the entire month of February, so far only on February 10, AQI 99 was recorded, which was in the satisfactory category.

Fewer satisfactory days in February

In the first 15 days of January, many days were recorded in the 'satisfactory' category and there were a total of 8 such days in the entire month. Whereas in December 2025, 2 days were satisfactory. In contrast, the air quality has been better only for one day so far in February. On Sunday, Mumbai's AQI was recorded at 134, which falls in the moderate category.

PM10 becomes the biggest pollutant

PM10 has been the main pollutant in February. According to experts, PM10 means dust particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers, which are present in the air. They are as small as about one-fifth the size of a human hair.

The main sources of PM10 are dust from construction sites, soil from unpaved roads, vehicle smoke and industrial emissions. According to Manoj Kumar, chief analyst of the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, the main cause of PM10 in Mumbai is dust from construction works and smoke from vehicles.
