Jagran correspondent, Patna. Congress workers protested against the Bihar government in Patna on Monday. He alleged that there was negligence in investigating the death of a student preparing for NEET in the state capital.

A large number of Congress workers, led by Bihar AICC in-charge Krishna Allavaru and party state president Rajesh Ram, gathered near the Income Tax crossing. They held placards in their hands and raised slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the police. They also burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister.

The 18-year-old student from Jehanabad, who was preparing for the medical entrance exam, was found unconscious in a girls hostel in Chitragupta Nagar here earlier this month. After being in a coma for several days, he died in a private hospital on January 11.

The girl's family has alleged that she was sexually assaulted and accused the authorities of trying to hush up the case. The police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident.

Congress said- Government and police are saving criminals

Speaking to reporters, Allavaru said,

"Law and order in the state has completely broken down. The government is giving protection to criminals. Everyone knows that people do not get justice in Bihar due to the arbitrariness of the police. Why was the FIR not registered in the first three days? People want justice for the girl and her family members. Why have the accused not been arrested till now?"

He said that constituting SIT to investigate the matter will not serve the purpose. The Bihar Congress in-charge alleged that such teams are formed to 'suppress facts and protect influential people'.

Meanwhile, on this matter, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram said,

"The government does not intend to solve the case. The government and the police are protecting the accused. We will fight for justice for the girl and her family members."

Samrat Chaudhary assured justice

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary had said on Sunday that those involved in the death of the NEET student would not be spared. Chaudhary, who holds the portfolio of Home Department, had told journalists,

"Police have already formed a SIT to investigate the incident. The DGP himself is monitoring the investigation. Those involved in the death of the NEET student will not be spared."

Suspicion of rape in post mortem report

Following her death, massive protests broke out in Patna, following which the police arrested the owner of the girls hostel. Initial investigation by doctors revealed that death was caused by taking excessive sleeping pills and she was also suffering from typhoid. However, the girl's postmortem report said that sexual violence could not be ruled out as the reason behind the incident.

Despite her family alleging sexual assault, police said medical reports and CCTV footage had ruled out the possibility. Patna Police had claimed in a statement issued on January 13,

"Doctors found no signs of sexual assault and said she had taken a large number of sleeping pills and was suffering from typhoid."

On Sunday, the family members of the deceased alleged that the girls hostel warden and doctors had initially termed it a case of suicide. He said action should be taken against the policemen who "tried to hush up" the case. The father of the deceased told journalists on Sunday,

"The hostel warden, the doctor and some policemen are involved. Action should be taken against them. The hostel authorities had offered us money to compromise. Even the policemen had threatened us and asked us not to speak anything to the media about the matter."
