Jagran Correspondent, Dehradun: Sunday Market, the new hub of cheap clothes, shoes etc. has now become ISBT area. The hustle and bustle of the Sunday market had started from Sunday morning itself.
However, with this this entire area has become a new traffic jam zone. The ISBT area, which is already suffering due to heavy vehicular traffic, saw the traffic system completely derailed during the Sunday Market.
On the orders of the district administration, the operation of Sunday market has been started from this Sunday on the plot in front of MDDA HIG Society in ISBT area. This plot was allotted by the government on lease for the metro rail project.
Presently it was under the control of MDDA and nursery was being developed on this part. However, as soon as the Sunday Market started operating, all the arrangements broke down and the biggest impact was on the traffic system.
There was heavy traffic jam throughout the day on this stretch directly connected to Haridwar Bypass Road (National Highway). At the same time, families living in residential societies of MDDA raised questions on the decision of selecting the place of Sunday Market.
Residents here said that special care should have been taken in selecting the location for temporary arrangement business activities like Sunday market. Such markets should be operated away from congested areas.
Arbitrary parking complicated the situation
The crowd gathered for shopping in the Sunday market and the extra vehicle pressure have increased the traffic jam, but the haphazard parking has made the situation worse. People who had come for shopping had parked their vehicles haphazardly on the road. From the arrangements made on the first day itself, there are indications that due to the Sunday market, this entire area will start facing traffic jams on Sunday also.
No review of situation after opening of expressway
It is possible that after the movement of vehicles starts on Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, the pressure of vehicles towards Doon will increase by 20 to 25 percent. The first face of this pressure will be from local vehicles in ISBT area only.
Anyway, most of the traffic of tourists from Delhi and other states towards Dehradun and Mussoorie happens during weekends only. Sunday Market is also organized on Sunday only. In such a situation, along with the additional pressure of outside vehicles, the pressure of the Sunday market will also severely test the residents of Doon and the government system.
