At the same time, it rained in Maharashtra's capital Mumbai on the first day of the year. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave, dense fog and rapid drop in temperature were observed in large parts of the country on January 1, 2026.
IMD said that on the first day of the new year 2026, there was light rain in Mumbai in the morning. Here, New Year's Eve in Delhi was the coldest day of December in the last six years. At the same time, the cold wave continued in Rajasthan also. In view of the severe cold, schools were closed in Guwahati, Assam.
According to the India Meteorological Department, Wednesday 31 December was the coldest day of December in the last six years in the national capital Delhi. The department said that on December 31, 2025, the temperature in Delhi was much below normal.
Weather officials said such cold day conditions occur when both day and night temperatures remain well below average, and according to the IMD, this trend is expected to continue till early January. Visibility also reduced due to light fog in many parts of the city in the evening, affecting travel conditions. According to the department, there may be light rain in some parts of Delhi today.
Continuous drop in temperature in Jharkhand
Let us tell you that at this time Eastern India is also in the grip of severe weather. According to the new IMD bulletin, a warning of dense fog was issued in Jharkhand, reducing visibility to dangerously high levels in several districts, while the temperature touched near 4 degrees Celsius at some places.

Parts of the North-East are also witnessing a significant drop in temperature. Due to the sudden drop in temperature, officials ordered the closure of schools for a week to protect the health of children. According to news agency PTI, cloudy sky, intermittent drizzle and cold wind made living conditions difficult, forcing people to light fires and wear heavy winter clothes.

It rained on the first day of the year in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. According to news agency ANI, Walkeshwar and Lower Parel areas of Mumbai received light rain, which reduced the pollution level. This rain on New Year has brought relief to the people.

Fall in temperature in Rajasthan
The harsh cold continues in Rajasthan. Karauri district of Rajasthan was the coldest place. Many cities in eastern and northern Rajasthan recorded minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, while Jaipur and Jodhpur also experienced cooler than normal nights. Dense to very dense fog is also expected over large parts of northern, western and eastern Rajasthan between January 1 and 3, which may affect road and rail traffic.
