Digital Desk, New Delhi. Rule breakers on Mumbai roads will no longer be able to escape traffic police action. Mumbai Traffic Police is going to replace its old and body-worn cameras with poor battery backup and be equipped with advanced cameras with latest technology.

In fact, we have started the process of upgrading those cameras installed on the streets of Mumbai which used to switch off in just 15-20 minutes. The new cameras will not only provide long battery life, but will also do live streaming of audio-video by directly connecting to the control room. This will bring transparency in the working of the traffic police and in case of dispute, accurate evidence will be available.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that Mumbai Traffic Police will soon be provided with body-worn cameras with advanced technology. Currently, traffic policemen are using around 1,800 body-worn cameras, but these devices are facing problems due to frequent battery issues.

Older cameras were claimed to provide 14 hours of standby time and 10 hours of recording, but in reality, many of them only last 15 to 20 minutes due to battery wear.

According to mid-day reports, around 3,000 traffic policemen work in two shifts across Mumbai. Most of them are deployed on the city roads to control traffic and take action against those who violate traffic rules. With the installation of new cameras, it will become difficult to hide by breaking traffic rules on the streets of Mumbai.

Recently in a meeting of senior police officers, a proposal to purchase new body-worn cameras was discussed and approved. The head of the police department has confirmed that traffic policemen will soon be provided with new and upgraded cameras.

What are the cameras used?

Features- These devices are water-resistant and support 36-megapixel photography, audio and video recording, night vision, GPS positioning, and Wi-Fi connectivity. They also feature a digital display, a push-button recording system and direct connection with the traffic police control room.

Each camera has 128 GB of internal storage, plus 5 GB of additional memory, and is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery, which is claimed to deliver 14 hours of standby time and up to 10 hours of usage.

Live recording linked to control room: Body-worn cameras are directly linked to the traffic police control room. Uniform-mounted cameras record audio, video and photos, allowing the control room to monitor live footage in real time.

"These body-worn cameras are old, and many of them are not working properly. Most of the cameras work only for 15 to 20 minutes before the battery drains completely. The new cameras will come with advanced features and better battery backup," a police source told Mid-Day.

Speaking to Mid-Day, Joint Commissioner of Police Anil Kumbhare said, "Right now, the Mumbai Traffic Police is using body-worn cameras made by Sanchar Company, which are being used for various purposes. We hope to get more advanced body-worn cameras very soon."
