Sandeep Ratan, Gurugram. The picture of old Gurugram is going to change in the coming years. After planning three elevated corridors in the old city, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has now made preparations for metro connectivity to the railway station. Along with this, a blueprint will also be drawn to connect the railway station with the Dwarka Expressway.

Work has already started to connect Old Gurugram with Metro and now possibilities will be explored to connect new public transport links with it. There are preparations to overcome the daily traffic jams, poor connectivity to the railway station and difficulties in access to the Dwarka Expressway through the metro. Now a detailed study will be conducted on the possibilities of connecting the railway station and Dwarka Expressway with the Old Gurugram Metro route.

A feasibility study for this project will be conducted by Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). Under this, a consultant will be appointed through the tender process, who will assess the technical feasibility as well as passenger facilities and cost. The study will look at how the metro route can be connected to the railway station area and where the best interchange can be made with the Dwarka Expressway.

Focus will be on passenger facilities

A major focus of the study will be on pedestrian convenience. At which places foot over bridges will be required, where escalators and lifts should be installed, so that elderly, women and disabled passengers do not face problems, all these points will be included in the study. Different options will be examined to make passenger movement safe and smooth in congested areas.

There will be relief from traffic, public transport will be strengthened

Meanwhile, the Railway Department is also engaged in the rejuvenation of Gurugram Railway Station. The station is being redeveloped at a cost of about Rs 401 crore. This station is being given a modern look with new platforms, modern passenger facilities and better entry-exit arrangements. Railways is preparing to launch this project in the month of June.

According to urban planners, if the metro extension and redevelopment of the railway station come together, Old Gurugram will get major relief from traffic. Also, after getting direct metro connectivity from Dwarka Expressway, the traffic in the entire area will become faster.

Commuters are facing problems due to lack of public transport like city buses and lack of direct connectivity with railway stations or metro stations. One is forced to travel in auto rickshaw or cab, due to which there is heavy traffic pressure on the roads throughout the day.

Feasibility study will be conducted for connectivity from railway station to metro and further to Dwarka Expressway. A consultant will be appointed for this.
