Jagran correspondent, Srinagar. As part of its continued drive against illegal mining and illegal transportation of minerals, police have seized four vehicles (one LNT machine and three dumpers) in Pulwama. According to information, this action was taken by a police team of Police Station Litar during routine checking in Rambiara-Lassipora-Litar area. During this operation, LNT machine and three dumpers were found involved in illegal transportation and mining of minerals.
The officer said that all vehicles and machinery have been seized on the spot as per the law. He said that a case has been registered at Litar police station and investigation has been started. Residents of different parts of the district said that the movement of dumpers, tippers and tractors increases significantly late at night, when most people are sleeping.
According to the local people, people involved in illegal mining work in remote and inaccessible places to avoid being caught. These people carry out illegal mining at unknown places, where no one can see them, the local people alleged. The extracted minerals are then transported to Srinagar using dumpers, tippers and tractors.
People living along main roads reported that the continuous movement of heavy vehicles at night causes severe noise pollution, affecting their sleep and daily life. The freshwater rivers of the valley, which originate from the lakes in our high hilly terrain, are the lifeline of the valley's biodiversity. These rivers not only irrigate our fields but are also a source of drinking water. In addition, these cold freshwater rivers serve as habitat for a variety of aquatic organisms, especially trout fish.
Due to large-scale river bed mining using heavy machines, these freshwater rivers have been plundered and destroyed in the last 10 years, he said. According to him, illegal mining of sand, gravel and large stones has increased in the last five-six years because construction companies have got unfettered access to these water bodies with the connivance of the local administration. From Kupwara and Budgam to Baramulla, our rivers and streams have been trampled.
