Rahul Gandhi demands parliamentary debate on air pollution
Digital Desk, New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said pollution is no longer just an environmental issue but a national health emergency. He stressed that Parliament should discuss it and the government should take action.
In the Facebook post, Rahul Gandhi read out people's messages and in the video urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare air pollution a national health emergency.
Demand for debate in 2025
Gandhi had earlier demanded a debate on this in Parliament during the winter session of 2025. “Now is the time for the government to allow discussion on this in Parliament and for the Prime Minister to declare pollution a national health emergency,” he said. We have to come together and make a serious plan. We have to ensure that there is enough money in the budget to deal with this problem.
He said, “In the last few days, I have read messages from thousands of Indians talking about the impact of pollution on their lives. The most important thing was the fear (for children, for parents, for the future) that is being felt by families in Indian cities.
...asking for clean air
Pollution is no longer just an environmental issue. This budget must provide concrete resources for real solutions. Indians are not asking for reports or empty promises. They are demanding clean air.'' According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality in the national capital remained in the 'very poor' category on Sunday morning, with the overall air quality index (AQI) recorded at 318 at around 8 am.
