PTI, United Nations. 40 global experts, including Professor Balaraman Ravindran of IIT Madras, have been included in a committee formed by the United Nations (UN) on AI. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has recommended the names of these eminent experts for this independent committee.
Guterres on Wednesday presented a list of 40 eminent individuals from each field to serve on the Scientific Panel on AI for a three-year term from the date of appointment for consideration by the UN General Assembly.
Those recommended by Guterres for the panel include Balaraman Ravindran, who heads the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI), Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (WSAI), Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) and Center for Responsible AI (CERAI) at IIT Madras.
Ravindran holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts and a master's degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He is an elected Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI) and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE).
“We are taking important steps toward ensuring that AI serves all of humanity,” Guterres said. “I have just submitted a list of 40 eminent individuals from every field to serve on a new independent international scientific panel on AI for consideration by the General Assembly.”
