The property tax branch of the Municipal Corporation on Wednesday started taking strict action against the defaulter taxpayers who have been owing taxes for a long time. Under this campaign, the Municipal Corporation team took action in Nagara Road, Leather Complex Road and Adarsh Nagar areas and sealed five buildings.
Liquor vends and premises were operating in all these buildings, which were not paying property tax to the Municipal Corporation for a long time. According to Municipal Corporation officials, this action has been taken on the basis of the list of defaulters sent by Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Committee (PMIDC), Chandigarh.
PMIDC had given clear instructions that property owners who have not deposited property tax for a long time, should either recover it immediately or their properties should be sealed as per rules.
Action taken on the orders of Mayor and Commissioner
Property Tax Branch Superintendents Bhupinder Singh Bading, Maheep Sarin and Rajeev Rishi said that this action is being taken under the instructions of Mayor Vaneet Dhir and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Rishi. He said that with the aim of making the Municipal Corporation financially strong and raising necessary resources for development works, strictness is being taken regarding tax collection.
Focus on property tax target
Officials clarified that the targets related to property tax that have been set in the Municipal Corporation's budget will be met under any circumstances. For this, action against defaulting taxpayers will be intensified in the coming days.
He also said that property owners who have not yet deposited the tax should voluntarily deposit their outstanding tax as soon as possible, otherwise similar strict action will be taken against them.
