However, doctors believe otherwise. Regarding this, Dr. Ashish Kumar (Senior Consultant, Cardiology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad) tells that for heart health, along with step count, it is also important how you are walking. You can complete 10 thousand steps while strolling in the mall, roaming in the office corridor or even while talking on the phone, but this does not provide the necessary training to the heart.

It is important to walk properly

Doctors say that heart health improves only when you walk properly. The walk should be such that your breathing and heart beat are fast, your body feels warm and you are slightly out of breath, but you are able to carry on a conversation.

For this reason, a brisk walk of 30 minutes is more beneficial than a leisurely walk throughout the day. This increases the flexibility of blood vessels, controls blood pressure, improves insulin sensitivity and also reduces cholesterol. According to the doctor, if 7 to 8 thousand steps are taken properly every day, then heart health can improve significantly.

Even 10 thousand steps are not enough?

However, in modern lifestyle even 10 thousand steps sometimes fall short. In situations like sitting for long hours, diabetes, fat accumulation around the stomach, high triglycerides or a family history of heart disease, just walking is not enough. In such cases, the body needs conditioning and not just light activity.

To keep your heart healthy, it is important that you do at least 150 minutes of continuous moderate intensity exercise a week. This may include brisk walking, cycling or climbing stairs. Besides, light strength exercises are also considered beneficial.

It is good to complete 10 thousand steps daily. This shows that you have been active throughout the day, but it does not guarantee heart safety.
