Jagran correspondent, Muzaffarpur. Recovery gang is active from Pani Tanki Chowk to Mithanpura Chowk. This gang collects Rs 5,000 per month from more than two hundred shops running illegally on both sides of the road in the name of the Municipal Corporation. Not only this, it collects fifty rupees per shop per day for cleaning the garbage spread on the road by these shopkeepers.
The extortion gang not only collects monthly extortion money from illegal shopkeepers but also provides space for opening new illegal shops. Resolves any dispute between shopkeepers. Even after the recovery being done in the name of Municipal Corporation, the Municipal Corporation administration is silent. The corporation administration runs a campaign against encroachment in other parts of the city, but never runs a campaign from Pani Tanki Chowk to Mithanpura Chowk.
Encroachers are continuously expanding their presence under the protection of extortion gangs. Where earlier there were two-four shops, now they have increased to around two hundred. Now illegal shops have been set up till the main gate of MDDM College. In the evening, this road completely becomes a hub of illegal shops. Youth coming from different parts of the city keep gathering here in the name of tea, water and eating fast food.
A shopkeeper, on the condition of anonymity, said that he has to pay five thousand rupees every month to set up a shop here. A separate amount has to be paid for cleaning. A shopkeeper took the name of the husband of a corporation councilor and said that the amount is given to him only. In return he has got a place. On the other hand, in this regard, Mayor Nirmala Devi said that after receiving the complaint, action will be taken after investigation.
Principal of MDDM had expressed threat to the safety of girl students and staff.
Dr. Kanupriya, former principal of MDDM, had described the illegally opened shops in the area as a threat to the girl students, staff and teachers. By giving a letter to SDO East, he had requested to remove such shops from the area.
After this, the then SDO East Amit Kumar had asked the Mushahari CO to remove the encroachment, but instead of getting better, the situation kept getting worse. These shops have now become a big den of smack also. Even after this, the administrative department of the district is keeping its eyes closed. He is probably waiting for some unpleasant incident.
