Sandeep Ratan, Gurugram. Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has made preparations to deal with the drinking water crisis in Cyber City this summer. The fifth unit under construction of Chandu Budhera Water Treatment Plant will become operational in the month of May.
This will provide 100 MLD additional drinking water to Gurugram city, which will help in dealing with the drinking water crisis during summers. Not only this, the process of setting up new units in Chandu-Budhera and Basai Water Treatment Plants has been expedited for future plans.
From May 2026 to April 2028, the city will start getting a total of 300 MLD additional canal drinking water. This will be of great help in meeting the demand which reaches more than 700 MLD in summer and 40 lakh people will not have to depend on underground drinking water or tankers.
According to GMDA officials, the work of setting up the fifth unit in Chandu-Budhera Water Treatment Plant is going on at a fast pace. Once this unit is ready, the capacity of the plant will increase by 100 MLD.

According to the department, the work is going on within the stipulated time and it will be fully operational in May 2026. Earlier in May 2025, GMDA had launched 100 MLD unit at Chandu Plant, which provided considerable relief from the drinking water crisis during summer.
GMDA's XEN Abhinav Verma said that the work of increasing the capacity of Chandu and Basai plants is going on continuously so that the water supply is better for the increasing population of the city. After the new units are installed in two years, the capacity of the plants will increase and there will be no shortage of water.
The sixth unit will be commissioned in December 2027
A sixth unit with 100 MLD capacity will also be set up in the Chandu plant. GMDA has got approval for this. According to officials, this unit will cost approximately Rs 54 crore and the unit will be operational by December 2027.
Fourth unit will be established in Basai
Preparations for expansion have also been started in Basai Water Treatment Plant, the second major source of the city. The fourth unit of 100 MLD capacity will be set up in Basai. For this, GMDA has started the tender process.
The estimated cost of this unit has been fixed at Rs 166 crore. Water storage tank will also be constructed here. This unit will be ready by April 2028 and will start supplying water to the city.
670 MLD canal drinking water is available
Chandu-Budhera and Basai plants together are currently providing a total of 670 MMLD canal drinking water to Gurugram. But due to the rapid increase in the city's population and construction activities, the demand increases to above 700 MLD in summer.
Due to this, supply gets reduced in many sectors and water crisis deepens in the last mile areas.
