What is the meaning of Chill-e-Kalan?

Actually, Chilla-e-Kalan is a Persian word, its meaning in Hindi is - very cold. The duration of Chilla-e-Kalan is forty days. From December 21 to January 29, the people of Kashmir have to face severe cold. During this period even rivers and waterfalls freeze. At the same time, snowfall also occurs in low-lying areas. After Chilla-e-Kalan, there is also Chilla-e-Bachcha i.e. baby cold. Its duration is from 19 February to 28 February. During this period the weather becomes slightly humid.

According to Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, there are chances of rain in the plains along with snowfall in the hilly areas on 20-21 December. There may be heavy snowfall in the hilly areas of Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal of Kashmir.

There will be a change in the weather in many parts of the state from December 19 and there may be light snowfall in the hilly areas of North and Central Kashmir. Later this year too, there may be light snowfall on 30-31 December, which is expected to increase the inflow of tourists to tourist places.

Rain and snowfall are awaited in the state since October. There may be light to moderate snowfall in places like world famous tourist destinations Gulmarg and Sonmarg. Two upcoming western disturbances are becoming active in the state. The first of these will start affecting the area from the night of December 20, while the second will become active on December 22.
