Digital Desk, New Delhi. The death toll from a weekend landslide in Indonesia's West Java province has risen to 17. 80 people are missing after the landslide, including 19 members of the naval force.
The marines were training in difficult terrain and heavy rain when the landslide struck early Saturday morning, burying their camp and 34 houses in Pasir Langu village on the slopes of Mount Burungrang. The number of personnel has been increased from 500 to 2,100 in the massive search operation.
National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said that 17 people have been confirmed dead, of which 11 have been identified and the process of identifying six others is still going on.
Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Ali said on Monday that four Marines were among the dead. They were members of a 23-member unit that was undergoing training on the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border. The rest are missing.
