Shreyas Iyer Will Play Vijay Hazare Trophy Match, Big Update On Mayank Yadav Also

Iyer returns to the ODI team.

Mumbai, PTI: Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is set to play his first competitive match after recovering from a spleen injury suffered in October last year. He will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Mumbai and Himachal Pradesh on January 6, but his availability in the upcoming series against New Zealand will depend on fitness.

Iyer suffered the injury during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney. He was admitted to the hospital with a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding. BCCI had released Iyer from the team in early November. After this, this right-handed batsman is now close to making a comeback.

will play for mumbai

According to a source at BCCI's Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, the 31-year-old player will play for his home team Mumbai in the major 50-over domestic competition. The source said that Shreyas was able to play his first 50-over RTP (Return to Play) match on January 2, 2026. He will play his second RTP match in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match on January 6 before being cleared to be fully fit. Thus, Iyer will be available to play with another Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal played his first match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Goa on 31 December.

Mayank close to achieving full fitness

Indian fast bowler Mayank Yadav is now close to being fit to bowl to his full potential after being out of the field for almost a year due to lower back spasms. This 23-year-old fast bowler caught everyone's attention with his stormy bowling in IPL 2024. After this he also played for India in the shortest format.

However, due to a back injury he was able to play only two competitive matches in 2025. Despite Mayank's fitness problems, his IPL team Lucknow Super Giants showed confidence in the fast bowler and kept him in their team ahead of the auction held last month.

A BCCI official said that Mayank Yadav is progressing well and is close to bowling to his full potential. He has also shown significant improvement in his strength and physical ability, bringing him closer to achieving the maximum fitness level required for fast bowling. The official also gave information about the fitness of Indian batsman Riyan Parag, who is not playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to a right shoulder injury. He played his last competitive match on 6 December.
