Smart toilets lying closed in Sector-21B. Awakening
Praveen Kaushik, Faridabad. A lot of money has been wasted in the name of completing various projects under the Smart City Mission. Under this mission, smart toilets were built at different places at a cost of Rs 2 crore, which started failing soon after they were built.
That means the cost of building one toilet was Rs 20 lakh. After some time, such an expensive toilet was not even checked for condom availability. No action against the contractor. The officers were also cleared.
Now this matter was investigated afresh. Engineers from the Municipal Corporation, Public Health Department and Public Works Department inspected each smart toilet. In which six have been declared condemned while four can be repaired and restarted.
This will cost around Rs 4 lakh. The question is from which officer the recovery of Rs 1.20 crore imposed on the six toilets will be done. Because these toilets broke down shortly after they were built. Because of this people had also stopped using them.
CM had also expressed his displeasure
On this matter, a meeting of Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority was held on May 4, 2025 in Sector-12 Mini Secretariat. It was presided over by Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini. At that time, public representatives had raised the issue of poor condition of smart toilets, then the Chief Minister had expressed displeasure in this matter.

DS Dhesi, Principal Advisor, Urban Development Department, who came here a few days after this meeting, also took cognizance and asked the Chief Executive Officer of Smart City Mission to investigate the matter.
Instructions were also given that a committee should be formed which will investigate what is the current condition of the toilet and how it can be improved.
How much will this cost? Progress reports had been called for from the beginning till now. In the investigation by the committee headed by the District Deputy Commissioner, four toilets in Sector-21D and Sector-19 have been declared worthy of repair.
Toilets were built in 2018
10 smart toilets were installed in the city by Smart City Limited from February 2018 to August 2018. Since its inception, it has been in controversy due to its quality and high price. Former Deputy Mayor of Municipal Corporation Manmohan Garg had raised this matter several times but the hearing was not held.
After a few days, the toilets started falling into disrepair. The monitoring and repair contract ran from October 15, 2018, to January 15, 2019. It is alleged that no repair work was done during this period.
These toilets are located near Sector-19 Police Post, Gopi Colony, NIT Five Police Post, Sector-21D Market, Metro Station, Badkhal. All these toilets are rusted. Doors, taps and other items have gone missing.

Four smart toilets will be repaired. After this they will be handed over to the Municipal Corporation. He will operate them. The remaining six toilets are not worth repairing. Therefore these have been declared condoms.
